Sleep apnea & snoring devices

Custom-fitted MDSA oral appliances as an alternative for people who snore or have mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea.

What this involves

A straightforward look at the process.

The MDSA (Medical Dental Sleep Appliance) is a custom-made oral device worn during sleep. It gently holds the lower jaw slightly forward, which helps keep the upper airway open. For many people this reduces snoring and can be a suitable option for mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea.
An oral appliance is not the right option for everyone. Suitability depends on your diagnosis, the condition of your teeth and jaw joints, and other factors. For sleep apnea specifically, we recommend a diagnosis and treatment plan involving your GP or a sleep physician so the device forms part of a wider care approach.
There are often alternative ways of treating the same problem depending on cost and preferred outcome — please discuss the treatment options with the dentist and, where appropriate, with your medical practitioner.

Common questions

Good to know before you visit.

Is this a replacement for a CPAP machine?
Not necessarily. Oral appliances are one option — usually for snoring or mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea. CPAP is often recommended for more severe cases. Your medical practitioner is best placed to advise which is appropriate for you.
Do I need a sleep study first?
For sleep apnea, a diagnosis from a GP or sleep physician — often based on a sleep study — helps us plan appropriate treatment. Snoring without diagnosed apnea can sometimes be addressed with an appliance alone; we'll discuss this at your consultation.
Are these appliances covered by health funds?
Cover varies between funds and policies. We're happy to provide a written quote so you can check your entitlements with your fund before proceeding.
