Cosmetic & whitening

Whitening and bonding options for teeth that are discoloured, chipped or misshapen.

What this involves

A straightforward look at the process.

Cosmetic dentistry covers a range of treatments that change the appearance of your teeth. The most common are tooth whitening (bleaching) and bonding — a conservative technique where tooth-coloured material is shaped directly onto the tooth.
Before any cosmetic treatment we assess the health of your teeth and gums, discuss what is realistic given your starting point, and go through the options that could achieve it. Results will vary from person to person, so we prefer to talk through what to expect rather than make promises.
There are often alternative ways of treating the same problem depending on cost and preferred outcome — please discuss the treatment options with the dentist so you can make an informed decision.

How the process works

A clear, structured visit.

01

Consultation

A check of your teeth and gums and a conversation about what you'd like to change.

02

Options discussion

We go through the suitable options — for example whitening, bonding, or a combination — including what each involves.

03

Treatment

Whitening may be in-chair or a take-home tray system; bonding is typically completed in a single visit per tooth.

04

Aftercare

Guidance on maintaining your result and reducing habits that commonly cause staining or wear.

Common questions

Good to know before you visit.

Is whitening suitable for everyone?
Not always. Existing restorations don't respond to whitening the same way natural teeth do, and some causes of discolouration need a different approach. Your dentist will assess this at the consultation.
What's the difference between in-chair and take-home whitening?
In-chair whitening is completed at the practice in a single visit. Take-home whitening uses custom trays and lower-strength gel applied over a period of days. Both have trade-offs, which we'll go through with you.
Is bonding permanent?
Bonding is a durable but not permanent treatment. It may need to be polished, touched up or replaced over time depending on wear and staining.
